Nestor Da, lives and works in France and Burkina Faso.

Born in 1982 in Ivory Coast, Nestor Da grew up in Burkina Faso. The self-taught photographer finds inspiration in the materiality of photography and the endless ways an image can be transformed. The artist creates his artwork using both found material and his own photographs. He juxtaposes, paints, and overlaps them in order to deconstruct the original piece. Photographs are to him, a raw material. He collects and brings together fragments that shed a new light on the image while creating a singular universe on photographic paper.

Nestor Da draws his inspiration from his immediate environment and the daily life of the people he encounters. His intuition and curiosity lead him to take unusual shots with startling details. Photographer or visual artist, Nestor Da is on the borderline of both practices. He enjoys transforming and reconstructing his own images by altering them through decoupage, collage, and painting. This process yields a model that the artist then photographs giving way to the final photograph.

His work has been exhibited in solo shows across Africa and Europe. His series L’ombre des images was presented at the Musée Mainssieux,Voiron, in 2010, at La Vitrine, Arles, and at the French Cultural Center Georges Melies in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in 2009.

Additionally, his artwork has been exhibited in several group shows, notably in Inventer le monde: l’artiste citoyen at Biennale Benin 2012, which granted him the French Institute’s “Prix d’encouragement”, and in Rencontres de Bamako: African Emerging Photography, at Paris Photo, Grand Palais in 2011.

Nestor Da also won the first prize of Fondation Blachère at the 8th Rencontres de Bamako in 2009, which provided him with a six months long art residency in the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie located in Arles, France. In 2013, his series Ondes de perturbation was nominated for the Prix Pictet Consumption.

In 2015, he was invited to participate in two residencies: Black Containers in France and Fès Photography International Encounters in Morocco where his work was presented at the Complexe Culturel Sidi Mohammed Ben Youssef and at the French Institute in Meknès.
