The title of the exhibition refers to Sembène Ousmane's approach, which saw cinema as an "evening course" for the uneducated or illiterate section of the population he wished to address. Cinema as a popular information system, a place of learning, a vector of freedom and political and social justice. For Cheikh Ndiaye, cinema is also the physical site of political resistance - under Senghor, opposition movements and parties held their meetings there. His relationship with archives and heritage is reflected in his works, which are highly symbolic, depicting dilapidated, destroyed or transformed cinemas. "My bias is that art is linked to memory. It's a memorial device".
