O avesso do tempo @ MAM - Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia: Roméo Mivekannin

28 August - 16 December 2025
Overview

Roméo Mivekannin plays with the invisible and the hidden. Through visual and conceptual means, Mivekannin seeks to ward off the relationships of domination that persist in our collective representations and to reappropriate certain stolen memories. His works offer a strategy of resistance that combines emotion and a critical eye. With strength and subtlety, the artist unravels and questions our collective and intimate heritages. At the crossroads of traditional and contemporary world, Roméo Mivekannin integrates his creations within an ancestral temporality, creating his own rituals, echoing voodoo cosmology. Between painting, sculpture and installation, his universe is multidisciplinary and ambitious. The artist plays with materials and seeks to disrupt the boundaries established between disciplines, in order to carry out, both formally and symbolically, an act of break-in that is unique to him.

Bringing fresh perspectives into museum collections, contemporary artists invite us to imagine history’s next chapters together. Their works offer up new interpretations and points of departure. Roméo Mivekannin creates links between the past and our contemporary world. His paintings and sculptures explore layers of shared memory, between Africa, Europe and South America.

Over the course of the last few years, Roméo has been revisiting milestones in the history of art, selected for the most part from the collections of the Musée du Louvre and from photographic archives from Benin and Brazil. The exhibition was presented first at Musée du Louvre Lens (Lens, France) and then travels to the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia (Salvador, Brazil).
