For the first exhibition in its new space at 104 rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, galerie Cécile Fakhoury presents an exhibition of previously unseen works by the American-Ivorian artist Aboudia.
The exhibition is accompanied by the launch of the artist's first monograph, co-edited by the gallery with contributions from Smooth Nzewi (curator at the Moma) and Gauz (Ivorian author and screenwriter), published by Editions Rizzoli.
Born in 1983, Aboudia draws his inspiration from the aesthetics of graffiti on the walls of Abidjan, particularly in the working-class districts of Abobo, Yopougon and Treichville, to document daily life in the context of Côte d'Ivoire's bustling economic and cultural capital.
In a whirlwind of pure energy, his works illustrate the resilience of Abidjan's inhabitants, and are always keen to denounce situations of injustice, particularly with regard to the condition of children and young people living in the city.
The popular expression “Impossible is not Ivorian” is a nod to Côte d'Ivoire's recent victory in the African Cup of Nations. It also perfectly illustrates the spirit that has always guided Aboudia in his career, from his beginnings in Abidjan to his international recognition.
