Galerie Cécile Fakhoury is pleased to announce its collaboration with artist, Kambui Olujimi.
Kambui Olujimi is an American artist born and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn in New York, USA. A renowned artist on the New York scene, Olujimi has been exploring the collective psyche for decades. His sensitive, humorous aesthetic highlights the implicit links between unchecked modes of thinking within contemporary society and the intertwined legacies of colonialism and imperialism. Olujimi draws these "inevitabilities" from the register of the ineffable to make them visible by giving them form and meaning, thus revealing their emptiness.
Through a multimedia artistic practice that includes video, sculpture, painting and installation, Olujimi unfolds a poignant body of work, articulated as a series of political and social commentaries. Historical facts and scientific curiosities mingle with a powerful poetry that awakens amongst viewers a deep sensitivity as an alternative way to apprehend the world.
On the occasion of the Paris + by Art Basel fair in October 2023, Galerie Cécile Fakhoury will present Olujimi’s solo exhibition entitled "THE LOST RIVERS DREAM INDEX, VOL.3." at our avenue Matignon location, from October 19th to November 25th. The collaboration between Galerie Cécile Fakhoury and Kambui Olujimi is in line with the gallery's ambitious development strategy over the last few years. By anchoring its action at the heart of the African continent as well as within global dialogues, Galerie Cécile Fakhoury is constantly connecting artistic impulses around the world. In so doing, the gallery supports the expression of ambitious contemporary inquiries that raise the essential and philosophical questions of tomorrow.
Kambui Olujimi's solo presentations include: In The Dark We Lose Our Edges for the 15th Sharjah Biennial; Where Does the Time Go… at Lincoln Center for Performing Arts; Walk With Me at Project for Empty Space; Zulu Time at Madison Museum of Contemporary Art; and A Life in Pictures at MIT List Visual Arts Center. His works have been presented in the United States at The Sundance Film Festival, Studio Museum in Harlem, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Andy Warhol Museum. Internationally his work has been featured at Museo Nacional Reina Sofia in Madrid; Kunsthal Rotterdam in Netherlands; Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Finland and Para Site in Hong Kong among others. Olujimi has been awarded artistic residencies at Black Rock Senegal, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and MacDowell.
