Journeying, containment, carrying @ La casa Encendia : Binta Diaw

21 September - 8 December 2024

Binta diaw's work is part of la casa encendida. curated by amina lawal agoro, the group show addresses the issue of afro-diasporic identities and communities with the aim of demonstrating the mechanisms of cooperation that have been put in place between different women artists.

Attentive to the work of those who trace the paths of the past to complicate our understanding of the present and conjure new narratives of black possibility, the exhibition points to african and african diasporic iconography, cosmology, and epistemology that speak through, beneath, and beyond the western, patriarchal, and colonized framework of the world. sometimes with a speculative twist, sometimes historical and sometimes metaphysical, but always a space in which the aesthetic expression of the black woman is a contemporary gesture to decipher the world and our place in it.

The title alludes to the movement -literal and metaphorical- through seas, continents, geographies and interior landscapes that is typical of the diasporic disposition. it alludes to the multiple forms -emotional, material, spatial- that we contain and transport as we travel, sometimes with the intention of transforming, recontextualizing or simply letting be.
