Jems Koko Bi - Wood engraving: Studio visit

2 April - 5 June 2021
  • Jems Koko Bi, born in 1966 in Sinfra, Ivory Coast, and now living between Abidjan and Essen in Germany, is today a major figure in contemporary art in Ivory Coast and internationally. In his new solo exhibition at Galerie Cécile Fakhoury - Abidjan, entitled Patrimoine, he presents, in addition to a series of monumental sculptures, both strong and sensitive, a work of wood engraving, also called xylogravure. In his studio in Angré, a district of Abidjan, we saw the creation of these engravings, which bear witness to the almost strange power of the appearance of forms and the revelation of colours.

Jems Koko Bi has been practising the ancient technique of engraving since 1995, after an apprenticeship with Klaus Simon, whose workshop he joined in Abidjan in 1992. In 2020, Jems Koko Bi returned to this practice, which he had put aside for a while, in dialogue with the work of HAP Grieshaber (1909-1981) during an exhibition at the Museum of Reutlingen in Germany.

Xylogravure, one of the oldest techniques for printing designs on a medium, involves three steps: cutting the wooden block, inking the wooden matrix and printing. For the printing, Jems Koko Bi chooses to apply the sheet of paper or canvas to the wooden block held still. The ink is then transferred by rubbing with the back of a spoon. Each work is thus unique.

Traditional wood engraving is a work of patience and silence, of repetition of gestures, of meticulousness and rigour. Wood is not worked without effort and the support, paper or canvas, refuses at first to adhere to the motif, to let itself be marked by its hollows and coloured bumps. Wood chisels, rollers, paint, hammers, the back of the spoon, all tools at the service of the work, a sublime meeting of several dimensions, the relief of the wood inhabiting the flatness of the paper, and the colours carrying within them the rough and living material of the tree.

The works of Jems Koko Bi embody a wisdom at the service of living matter. The artist pays tribute to trees and their woods, to their infinite and polymorphous resources, to the stories they whisper and to the possibilities they harbour. If trees carry the history of the world within them, Jems is its oracle, revealing their messages to us at the end of a powerful physical and spiritual encounter with them.
