Souleymane Keïta is a contemporary of the first generation of the École de Dakar, but his essentially abstract practice is singular and atypical, and moves away from the era. He creates numerous series inspired by his history and daily life as a Senegalese man born in Gorée with Mandinka origins.
A prolific artist, Souleymane Keïta has created a vast body of work: canvases, drawings, tapestries, engravings, ceramics, textiles; using a variety of materials, from watercolor and oil paint to pastel pencils and collage. The artist doesn't hesitate to question the boundaries of each medium, adding elements taken from his environment: keys, wood, sand, fabric and threads that give relief and enigma to the visual narrative of the works.
