Black is a color, 2004"The Cultural and Artistic History of African Americans from the 1920s to the Present. A focus on black artists whose work resonates with and responds to the political and social contexts of the United States and led me to create my corpus Is black a color? where I question notions of identity related to today's miscegenation. By cross-breeding I mean not only color or origins but also cultural cross-breeding, which for me is just as important in the definition of an identity". DF
Historian of contemporary art, Elvan Zabunyan is a qualified lecturer at the University of Rennes 2 and art critic. Richly illustrated historical research and critical analysis, Black is a Color traces the emergence of an artistic identity - that of black American artists from the Harlem Renaissance to the present day - and its multiple forms of representation (painting, sculpture, photography, video and performance). -

La Maison de Jean-Pierre Raynaud, Michelle Porte, 1993
Court-métrage documentaire"It's the beginning of the 90s, I'm in my early twenties and I don't yet know that I'd become an artist. It's the beginning of Arte, and one night, late, I come across this documentary that had fascinated me at the time. The very idea of building such an ultimate habitat (all tiled) and then destroying it completely to make it continue to live in another form has long questioned me about the meaning of art." DF
Jean-Pierre Raynaud is a visual artist born in France in 1939. In 1969, he started to build his own house in La Celle Saint-Cloud, which is his main work of art. It will be twenty-four years of research on space. In 1993, he decides to destroy it and exhibits the pieces of the house in surgical containers at the CAPC museum of contemporary art in Bordeaux. Michelle Porte's film, La Maison, a testimony of the event, will be shown on this occasion. He represented France at the Venice Biennale the same year and won the honorary prize.

Mark Rothko
Black on Maroon, 1958"Seen at the Tate a few years ago. There's such a difference between seeing a reproduction of a work and seeing it vibrate. Rothko's work gives one the ability to feel, to experience that." DF
Mark Rothko (1903-1970) is an American painter, who occupies a singular place within the New York School. After experimenting with Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism, he developed a new way of painting in the late 1940s. Mark Rothko, inspired by Nietzsche, Greek mythology and Henri Matisse, invented a new, meditative way of painting. In his canvases, he expresses himself exclusively by means of the colour he places on the canvas in flat areas with indecisive edges, in moving surfaces, sometimes monochrome and sometimes composed of variously coloured stripes. He thus reaches a particularly sensitive spiritual dimension. -

"The life and work of David Hammons is a source of inspiration. In particular, I quoted his African American Flag, when I created 3D African European Flag on the concept of the black European nation." DF
Born in 1943 in the United States, David Hammons is an American artist. He once said that "scandalously magical things happen when you play with a symbol". Over the past 50 years, Hammons has created a vocabulary of symbols from everyday life and played with them in the form of prints, drawings, performances, videos, found object sculptures and paintings. The result has indeed often been scandalous and tinged with a particular magic, derived from the transformation of everyday objects into allegories of the experience of the marginalized in the contemporary world, be it an artist, a stranger, a madman, or, more recurrently, a person of colour. -
