In the Barnum series, Roméo Mivekannin questions the place of Black people in a Western iconography marked by the systems of human trafficking and domination that were slavery and colonisation. By citing photographs of 'human zoos', famous classical paintings or iconic photographs illustrating the systemic injustices suffered by black people, and by representing himself in his compositions, the artist draws a direct line between yesterday and today.
