"Coalescent Lights" draws on conceptual threads from across multiple generations of artists and highlights 1-54’s unwavering commitment to expanding discourses on contemporary African art, while contributing to the institutional and market recognition of African artists.
On view at Christie’s Hong Kong from 26 - 30 March 2024, this exhibition curated by Kami Gahiga is a poetic exploration of the rich tapestry of approaches and aesthetic philosophies embedded within contemporary African art. Drawing from Simon Njami‘s observations that the contemporary ‘moves across multiple dimensions, shaped by numerous experiences, sometimes contradictory, refusing confinement within any identity prison’, the exhibition spotlights distinct luminaries who have exhibited their works at previous global editions of the fair this past decade.
